Beauty Food Spotlight: It's All About The Bluebs!

For as small as blueberries are, they pack quite a nutrient-dense punch. They receive the beauty food stamp of approval thanks to antioxidants and compounds called anthocyanins, which give them their deep blue/violet hue and shields the skin from harmful free radicals that can damage the collagen. And collagen is what keeps your skin firm - you want that! The high content of Vitamin C in blueberries also helps to fuel collagen production, so there's no reason for you to not be tossing these in your recipes and smoothies! Try these:

Simple Gluten Free Waffles with Blueberry Cardamom Sauce, a nice "rise and shine" weekend brunch dish. Or if you prefer pancakes, try this Blueberry Skillet Pancake.

Fig & Blueberry Chia Pudding, the perfect way to kickstart your mornings. Plus, chia seeds are loaded with those healthy omegas, which also contribute to beautiful, glowing skin.

And of course, one of the easiest ways to use blueberries on a regular basis is by making lots of nourishing smoothies. Try this blueberry coconut shakethis back-to-basics blueberry hemp smoothie or my in-a-hurry Beauty Smoothie to take with you on the go by tossing all of these ingredients into a blender:

  • 1/2 cup frozen blueberries
  • 1 banana
  • 1 heaping tbsp of nut butter (I favor JEM Raw Organic's Superberry Almond Butter because of the additional superfood punch. And this stuff is highly addictive, in a good way.)
  • 1 tbsp cacao powder
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil
  • 1 cup almond milk (or more depending on desired consistency)

And finally, go crazy and whip up this farm-to-face blueberry body scrub (Blake Lively approved).

Travel Well & Often

It's pretty awesome that companies like El Camino Travel spark the wanderlust in you by curating full-service travel experiences where they book you and a dozen ready-for-anything friends in an exotic location, designate a personal photographer and lead you through itineraries full of local foods and experiences. On top of it all, each trip includes a charitable component (10% of the profits from each trip will go to a local social entrepreneur who is helping to change the face of their country and you actually will meet this inspiring individual during your trip). Chalkboard Magazine featured a nice interview with the company's founders - read it here

If you've ever been to a hot springs before, then you are a lucky one. It's on my list, and even more-so at the top now thanks to this 3 States, 3 Hot Springs feature that I came across. Hot springs are incredible healing and create a heightened sense of calm, not to mention that you get to sit there and soak while taking in incredible views around you. When a hot tub just isn't doing it for you, up the ante with an adventure somewhere that has some of the world's most coveted hot springs.

Book a yoga retreat! It's one of the best ways to re-center and relax, which is what a vacation should be all about anyways. Well + Good recently featured a list of their top 10, which you can use as a reference point. Back in December, I went to a retreat in Rincon, Puerto Rico with the lovely ladies of Bliss Out Wellness and I can't say enough good things. Read about their retreats here (and consider joining me for the next one in April!)

Give It A Good Listen

Sometimes, it's music that can get you through a long day. Uplifting beats, dancing in your chair, being able to belt the lyrics out without anyone else around as you frolick around your apartment in nothing but a towel. They can alter your state of mind, wind you up, wind you down, speak to your current feelings or just simply serve as some nice background noise.

Here are a few artists & songs that I've been playing on repeat (click to listen):

In The Valley Below - Peaches // Vallis Alps - Young // Sylvan Esso - Hey Mami // Blondfire - Where The Kids Are // Cillie Barnes - Hey Hi // Julia Stone - It's All Okay // Ezra Vine - Celeste // Local Natives - Wide Eyes // Broods - Taking You There // Fink - Looking Too Closely // Blackbird Blackbird - Pure // Handsome Ghost - Low East // Mr Little Jeans - Heaven Sent // Youth Lagoon - Daydream // George Ezra - Budapest

I've also sprinkled these throughout my Spotify playlists, which you can mostly find here:

A Lovely State of Mind // A Welcome Distraction // New Yoga // The Feels

So eat your blueberries, book your next getaway, listen to some lovely tunes...& be well!
