In Lieu Of Coffee: Latte Alternatives with Potent Health Benefits
I'm not here to diss your caffeine addiction, because I was once hooked, too. Until I learned that it was wreaking havoc on my hormones and needed to find some alternatives in order to maintain my health + therefore my own sanity. And you might think...but wait. Matcha is caffeine, too. Yes, it is. And I've had to cut that back as well.
But I absolutely do not believe in deprivation, so I'll still enjoy the occasional matcha, but I mix it up with herbal blends that are much less acidic, much higher in antioxidants and nourish the insides like a warm hug. You'd be surprised at just how many wonderful alternatives there are, and how truly creative you can get with them. Almond butter in your morning latte? Sure thing. Ghee? Yep. Coconut oil, ashwagandha, macadamia nut milk, cacao powder. You certainly aren't limited with your options. That I can promise you.
I've scouted high + low for some latte alternatives that will upgrade your entire morning + evening routines. Rooibos, yerba mate, turmeric, lavender, matcha + more, from some of my favorite wellness ladies around. And it's only fitting to pair each one with an equally delicious indulgence, so there's that too.
Honey + Ginger + Black Pepper Spiced Rooibos Tea Latte | Spice + Sprout
Rooibos is a fragrant, red herbal tea, and while not quite as well known as green tea, has just as many benefits. It is naturally caffeine-free and is loaded with minerals like calcium, iron, potassium, copper, zinc and magnesium (good for skin, hair + bone health). Additionally, its naturally soothing properties support the central nervous system to promote relaxation + restful sleep.
Pair it with this delicious and nutrient-dense comfort bowl of Apple Pie Oatmeal.
Lemon Lavender Tea Latte | The First Mess
Lavender is the luxury of natural stress relief. Aside from rolling lavender essential oil on your pulse points, ingesting it has just as many nurturing benefits including an improved mood, more restful sleep, anti-inflammatory, reducing skin irritation and soothing stomach bloating.
Golden Milk Turmeric Milk Latte | Nutrition Stripped
Turmeric works wonders. The main compound, curcumin, gives turmeric the bright yellow color and the root itself has potent anti-inflammatory benefits and is very high in antioxidants + phytonutrients. Make this your PMS beverage of choice, as turmeric is known to support menstrual pain and is said to assist in the prevention of specific cancers, including colon, skin and pancreatic.
Macadamia Yerba Mate Latte | Will Frolic For Food
The creator of this dreamy latte says it best: Yerba mate typically has about as much caffeine as green or white teas. But it also contains theobromine, the same invigorating and stimulating xanthine found in chocolate. In combination, you get an energetic boost, enhanced clarity and focus and a bit of heart-opening bliss-vibes. And in my experience, you don’t get that caffeine crash associated with coffee.
Pair it with this Chai Teff Porridge and learn how to love slow mornings.
Matcha Latte | Solful Health
The benefits of matcha hardly need an explanation anymore, but if you haven't jumped on the bandwagon just yet, here's a brief little rundown. Unlike traditional green tea, the whole tea leaf is consumed when drinking matcha, which significantly increases your antioxidant intake (re: the things that reduce harmful free radicals in your body). Its bright green color is due to a rich content of chlorophyll, one of nature's best detoxifiers, and contains EGCG, which is known to boost the immune system + increase metabolism. Fun fact: gram for gram, matcha has more antioxidant power than pomegranates, acai, wild blueberries, dark chocolate, goji berries, and walnuts combined.
Pair it with this Sea Salt + Chocolate Avocado Mousse for an indulgent morning boost.
And because I want to reach through the screen and grab this for my personal enjoyment right now, THIS psychedelic Blueberry Latte.
