Q&A with Alison Wu of WU HAUS

Meet Alison Wu of WU HAUS. This woman's craft is truly an art, from Beyoncé-inspired smoothies to these beauties that I'd gladly take any day over traditional birthday cake. 

Instagram has a magical way of connecting women in the wellness community to celebrate our talents, wits and all around badassery. Fortunately, many of us with a like-minded approach aren't here to one-up each other, but learn from one another, empower one another and acknowledge what makes each one of us unique and truly amazing. As a collective force, we are making noticeable shifts and choosing to collaborate + unite rather than crumble + divide. 

Instagram is how I found and connected with Alison, and as you can imagine, couldn't help but do anything other than completely swoon over her visual diary + kitchen creations. Most notably, her ombré smoothies. She's got a special knack for showcasing her creativity + dedication to eating well in the form of intuitive ingredient combinations that'll make you weak in the knees. In fact, she is the sole inspiration behind my Pumpkin Spice Smoothie Parfaits.

In an effort to further share and showcase her beautiful work and genuinely good soul, I went behind-the-scenes with her for a little virtual Q&A, because aren't those always fun! 

I'm so happy to be featuring this woman today and hope that you'll feel just as inspired as I do.

   

Would you mind sharing a bit about your background and the inspiration behind WU HAUS?

I've always loved food and had a passion for health. After years of friends encouraging me, I started WU HAUS to share my recipes and inspirations. I really want people to understand how delicious healthy food can be. And also how beautiful and easy-to-make it can be, too.

Are there any people, places or things that have influenced your creative approach to recipes + styling? 

Sarah Britton of My New Roots immediately comes to mind as an early influence. I love what she does with healthy food. 

Portland, OR, has been a major influence in my lifestyle and what I eat. I'm so thankful to live in a place that has some of the best food in the world.

The vibrant colors that can be achieved from plant-based foods constantly inspires me to create more and discover new ingredients I can use to create new colors and textures.

The parfait that started it all. How have you evolved since then, both personally and professionally?  

Wow! Yeah, the smoothies have really evolved since then. It's quite amazing and humbling to see people's response to my work. This past year was my first year working as a freelance stylist, recipe developer and creative consultant. I feel so grateful for all that has happened in one year and how things have taken off.

In one of your Instagram posts, you shared: "I love how the food I make can sometimes express my feelings at the time" and posted this gorgeous green smoothie bowl. Would you say that your recipes also express a bit of your personality? 

Definitely! What comes out of my kitchen is directly dependent on how I'm feeling, what mood I'm in and how I want to move through my day or night. All of the food I make captures these feelings in that time and place.

Aside from your creativity in the kitchen and behind the lens, what else should we know about you?

I really love interior design. If I had a second career, it would be creating beautiful spaces for people to live and work in.

Have you ever offered food styling/smoothie making workshops, or would you consider it? (Honestly, you should just open up a WuHaus cafe. I think many would agree with me here.)

I haven't, but I've definitely thought about it, and may be something I offer in the future. I've also toyed with the idea of opening a brick and mortar. For now, that's just a dream, but you never know!

As a woman that stays busy, travels often and manages a blog among several other things, I'm sure that you understand the importance of self-care, beyond the ingredients in our food. Would you let us in on a few of your self-care practices + rituals? 

A good night's sleep and drinking lots of water are top on my list. Laughter is essential. It's so important to have a sense of humor about things. Some others: Breath practice. Yoga + meditation. Daily affirmations spoken out loud and to myself. Baths in the colder months. Getting my nails done.

And finally, what ingredients or creative spins can we expect to see from you this winter?

Always a focus on seasonal ingredients, so as we move through fall and winter my recipes will change to incorporate those items. Currently, I'm headed to Japan, and I'm excited about persimmon season!
