I remember very well the day that this lady was engaged. It was a normal day at the office and she so nonchalantly walked in with a shiny new band on her hand. One of those moments where you're like "oh it's about time!" but yet still so happy for the new couple-to-be.
Quick flashback. It was funny how the two of us met, previously off in our own work bubbles, on two very different client accounts, never once really crossing paths. A shame that work has a tendency to do that sometimes. Anyhow, low and behold, she soon joined my team (!) and with her, she brought a contagious, renewed passion for yoga. Vinyasa, in particular - a form of yoga that I never practiced until she introduced me to it. I had always held that mentality of only practicing bikram yoga, brainwashed into thinking that it was the yoga of all yogas and that I wouldn't find anything else that would hook me. In making a long story short, Jen Jones (better known as @lilimissjen) is the reason that I latched on to yoga in a city that sometimes got the best of me. She is essentially the reason that I escaped the dreadful winter last year to pursue my 200 hour yoga certification at Nosara Yoga Institute in beautiful Costa Rica. Because it was her that I watched embark on her own teacher training experience at Prana Power Yoga in Brooklyn and push through sweat and tears (no blood, thank goodness) to come out on a much better end of things. To her, the opportunity was a means of getting into wedding shape (which she of course did), but it ended up to be so much more than that - mentally, physically, emotionally. That stuck with me, and so there I was last February getting my own dose of what it was like to endure a fully immersed yoga teacher training experience. My advice to anyone interested? You don't have to ask me twice. Go ahead and do it.
So back to wedding things. I remember Jen wanting so badly to have her wedding on the 21st night of September, because it fell exactly on a Saturday night and how fun would that have been? Earth, Wind and Fire on repeat all. night. long. Initially it was to be at a gorgeous farm upstate, but that became much too complicated and expensive. So the River Cafe in DUMBO it was, after re-opening from Hurricane Sandy. Saturday, October 12, 2013. Celebrating Jen + Clay, #jonespending if you will "Drinks, Dinner and Foolish Merry Making to Follow." Check.
And fancy nails done thanks to @nailsbymimi. We had aztec influence, anchors and dinosaurs going on in there. Because if you're going to get your nails done, why not make it fun?
The weather was perfect. The most gorgeous fall evening that I've ever witnessed in NYC. Perfect temperature, perfect breeze, perfect sunset and perfect city views from Brooklyn. It was intimate and cozy, un-traditional and romantic. Full of memories, delicious food, good wine, quality time on the dance floor and sweet surprises which included autumn flavored gluten free and vegan cakes, because only in NYC.
And may I say how absolutely stunning Jen looked? For someone who you typically would see roaming around in her lululemon attire and leading some killer yoga sequences, she sure did pull off that white dress. It was made for her.
And yes, there were dinosaur planters. Because who said that you can't have succulents sitting inside plastic, toy store spray painted dinosaurs? We spent an entire afternoon secretly spray painting those things red and gold. To this day, I still have mine sitting right next to my window sill in my kitchen. Pinterest project well done.
So as you would expect, we certainly did some foolish merry-making that perfect October evening. Reagan was my date and we sure did embrace it (and each other). I still have Jen to thank for introducing me to Reagan, by the way (and our entire annual Friendsgiving crew; I'm looking at you, Christy and Emma). But Reagan is the only one that I give permission to put a pair of scissors to my locks. And ironically enough, we learned that we share a mutual friend that I grew up with and now lives just a few blocks away from me on the UES. Very small world.
So here we are. October 12, 2014. One year of celebrating this dapper couple. May we toast to the past, present and future full of more merry-making, more friendships, more Friendsgivings, more mulled wine, more yoga, more smiles, more laughs and so much more of all those good feeling things. #jonesiversary round 1, with plenty more rounds to go.
And we have Anna Wu Photography to thank for capturing these amazing memories. To see more photos from Jen + Clay's October wedding and to check out more of Anna's beautiful work, click here.
