If you live in NYC and haven't been to Liquiteria yet for their seasonal Apple Crisp, then you may want to hustle on this. Better yet, you can try to craft one up on your own, as I did. Granted, it took me three tries or so until I felt that this was "perfected" - adding ingredients here and there to continue to flavor it close enough to Liquiteria's original. This is one of those smoothie recipes where you can feel free to mix & match, swapping the type of nut butter, yogurt or non-dairy milk that you wish to use.
Before I proceed to the menu of ingredients, I must introduce you to a few special ingredients that took this smoothie to a whole new level.
Bees Knees Spicy is hand-made with raw honey from independent beekeepers in the Hudson Valley and infused with chili peppers to give it a nice, well-rounded kick. I've tried it on sliced bananas and oatmeal, however drizzling it into this smoothie gives that touch of heat that bites back.
Jew Raw Organic Cinnamon Red Maca Almond Butter is the almond butter of all almond butters. Once you have a taste of this stuff, you're successfully spoiled and will do anything and everything to get your hands on a jar. It's a blend of sprouted almonds, warming cinnamon and raw maca that's high in Vitamin E and healthy fats. Stock up because you'll go through these very, very quickly.
If know me, you know that I don't do the dairy thing, so I've been latching on to Vanilla Cultured Coconut Milk Yogurt from So Delicious where I still feel like I can get a dose of probiotics and calcium. It's smooth, rich and satisfying and helps sustain you for a few hours.
Bees Knees Spicy Apple Crisp
Serves one...and very well at that
Handful of organic, raw spinach
1 organic green apple, chopped into smaller pieces
1 banana (preferably frozen, but not necessary)
1 tbsp almond butter (walnut butter would work well, however I used my favorite JEM Raw Organic Cinnamon Red Maca Almond Butter)
6 oz container of non-dairy yogurt of choice (and of course I used So Delicious Vanilla Cultured Coconut Milk)
1 cup almond milk (or non-dairy milk of choice; use less or more depending on how thin or thick you want the consistency to be)
1 tbsp raw honey (Bees Knees Spicy Honey, in this case for the extra crispness)
1/2 - 1 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp ground ginger
dash of cayenne (literally, just a dash!)
Blend well and VOILA! Like a spicy crisp apple pie in a jar that's nutrient dense and absolutely delicious.
